Jay F. Utley has over two decades of experience in all aspects of successfully representing multinational corporations in complex, commercial litigation at both the district court and appellate levels all over the globe. He has served as lead counsel in numerous proceedings in which the substantive legal issues have been eclipsed by the procedural complexities of multiple parties with multiple cases in multiple U.S. and non-U.S. jurisdictions and venues. Before co-founding Forrest Weldon Law Group, LLP, Jay was a Principal at Baker & McKenzie LLP. During his twenty-year tenure there, Baker McKenzie ranked as the largest and best known law firm in the world, and Jay served as head of the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology Practice in Texas.

  • Successfully represented the world’s leading provider of digital projection systems as lead counsel against a former officer over claims of fraud, breach of contract, and unjust enrichment in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas and in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
  • Successfully represented a top-ten worldwide video game company and its multi-national retailers as lead counsel in multi-party litigation over proper venue for claims related to patented gaming technology by obtaining unprecedented legal ruling in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.
  • Successfully represented the world’s leading provider of advanced power welding equipment against its largest worldwide competitor over patented power electronics in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, obtaining an injunction against further sales of products in the United States.
  • Successfully represented the world’s leading supplier of three-dimensional cinema systems as lead counsel against its largest worldwide competitor in the United States International Trade Commission, obtaining an injunction against further importation of products into the United States.
  • Successfully represented Fortune 500 medical diagnostics company as lead counsel in multiple lawsuits over its laboratory testing and medical records maintenance before the United States District Courts for the District of New Mexico and for the Central District of California.
  • Successfully represented the largest United States poultry producer over claimed antitrust violations before the full court of United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
  • Successfully represented two Fortune 100 financial institutions as lead counsel over electronic payment processing with more than $1 billion in controversy before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and before the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
  • Successfully represented German engineering company as lead counsel against a putative nationwide class action over exposure to neurotoxins during the Persian Gulf War before the Fourteenth Court of Appeals for the State of Texas and before the Supreme Court of the State of Texas.

Jay presents keynote lectures annually to legal, business, church, civic, and educational organizations and universities on litigation strategy, legal advances, changes in the law, ethics, conflict resolution, community service, effective interpersonal and workgroup communication, and organizational leadership at local, national, and international seminars and conventions with audiences ranging in number from 10 to over 10,000 in places like Berlin, Chicago, Dallas, Dusseldorf, London, Munich, Paris, Shanghai, Taipei, and Tokyo.
